Eclipse Retreat: Path of Totality

On Monday, April 8, 2024, a much-anticipated solar eclipse will occur, and the “path of totality” will pass right over the Olmsted area! You are invited to a Sunday through Tuesday retreat to enjoy the eclipse together with others. We’ll explore a few Biblical images of the majesty of God’s creation, and, on Monday, plan to view the eclipse together using telescopes with solar filtering and other safe viewing means. (Should our weather obstruct our view locally, we’ll watch live images of the eclipse streamed via the Internet.)

Jeff Sterling is a retired United Methodist pastor and self-proclaimed “cosmos peeper.” One of his many retirement objectives was to purchase a telescope and “renew” an interest in astronomy first kindled in his early school years. “I’ve owned several telescopes over the years, and have been a space exploration aficionado since the earliest days of Project Mercury.”

​His role is “convener,” not “expert” for this retreat, and is hoping a few more well-versed and experienced astronomy-buffs sign up, lending their expertise to our experience.

Event Information

  • Event begins with dinner on Sunday, April 7 and concludes with lunch on Tuesday, April 9. Check-in is in Groves Lodge between 3 and 5pm on Sunday.
  • Pricing includes two-nights stay (private hotel-style room with linens), six meals, and course tuition. Discount available for those willing to select or be assigned a roommate.
