Weaving a Pattern of Hospitality

 October 2010

Can you picture what the words "come away" might look like if translated into a woven design?  The photo below is of a pattern created by Marie Larson on her large loom.  The pattern is based on a somewhat complicated process which Marie describes below:

Recently, I was excited to be asked to participate in the Church Music Workshop held here at Olmsted Manor by giving a weaving demonstration.  For one of the Event’s evening programs, I was asked to present a weaving technique called Name Draw Down Drafting.  To create a weaving pattern with this technique, Name Draw Down Drafting uses a person’s name or a phrase so that the cloth becomes “one of a kind,” unique to that particular name or phrase.

The pattern shown here in the background is one of the results of some the drafting that we did during the weaving demonstration.  To create this particular weaving pattern, we used the phrase “Come Away” from the theme of the Church Music Workshop and the new Olmsted logo.  It references the scripture Mark 6:31.  Because we had all come away from our busy lives to be at Olmsted to rest awhile, it seemed especially appropriate.

After my demonstration, I returned to my everyday life refreshed from my chance to share something I love with the wonderful, creative people of the workshop, but even more so by the fellowship, prayer, and music that I experienced with them.  My Come Away experience will sustain me through the everyday days to come until I can return to Olmsted again.
