Beyond March Mudness...

An Olmsted Moment

Beyond March Mudness...
Easter-time
finds us in what some local people call our "Mud Season."
While the
muddy landscape may seem dreary and a bit maddening, it is really a
very hopeful sign after a long winter. March and early April are
frequently grey weather days in this region. Now this muddy ground
begins to send out shoots of crocuses and daffodils. Reminding us
of the hopeful, transforming resurrection of Easter, these flowers
are a welcome sign that the world outside our windows is about to be
transformed into the rich, lush landscape that so many people find
to be an irresistible subject for their cameras and paintbrushes.
Recently Olmsted hosted a pastor who was here on a personal
retreat. This pastor, we'll call him Eric, finds Olmsted to be an
excellent place to focus on his sermon planning. With fewer outside
distractions, Eric finds it is easier to get in some
productive thinking time. When I asked if the cloudy drizzle
dampened his spirit he thought a moment and said "Not really, it
just makes it easier to focus on my work." While Eric is busy
transforming ideas into sermons, the gardens, fields, and woods are
busy transforming seeds and bulbs into flowers and bare woody tree
branches into dense, productive foliage.
