The hymns of Charles Wesley have been sung by worshippers for nearly 300 years.  Though Wesley’s hymns are known by heart to many, the deeper meanings which he infused into each verse are often missed.  This workshop will center on the great beliefs and festivals of the Christian Faith, as interpreted by Charles Wesley in his hymns.  The book “A THOUSAND TONGUES: The Wesley Hymns as a Guide to Scriptural Teaching,” by John Lawson will be used during the workshop.   This book contains a selection of Wesley's hymns with line by line Scripture references, expressing Christian doctrines such as God the Sovereign Creator, the Divine Son, the Holy Spirit, Grace and Holiness.  Wesley saw his hymns as a means to teach Christian truths, connecting worship and theology.  Music will definitely be part of this event!  Several different settings of some of the great hymns will be incorporated, traditional (American and Brithis) and contemporary Christian rock.

Rev. William E. White, has been a retired member of the Western PA Conference since 2007.  He served Heckathorn Church, 1972-83, New Wilmington Church, 1983-1995, and Freeport Church, 1995-2007.  He is a graduate of Asbury College, 1966, the Candler School of Theology, Emory University, 1969, and the University of Cambridge, England 1972.  He is a charter member of The Charles Wesley Society, currently serving on the society’s Board of Directors.
